Advancing Digital Experiences in Higher Education

My role at the University of Rochester has allowed me to collaborate with talented teams to transform ideas into tangible results.

Here, I share some of the key projects that showcase my efforts in elevating user engagement and streamlining digital platforms within the University.

Rochester Core WordPress Theme

As the product owner of Rochester Core, the University of Rochester’s first and only enterprise-wide WordPress theme, I led the initiative to unify the University’s digital presence. Launched in 2020, Rochester Core addressed the challenge of creating a cohesive and accessible web experience across approximately 200 University WordPress sites.

I am responsible for crafting the product roadmap and overseeing each component, from research and prototyping to development and testing. By focusing on a branded, modular template with accessibility at its core, we provided a flexible solution that met diverse needs while maintaining consistency.

Without a formal policy, we created grassroots communication efforts to promote adoption. This approach proved successful, and we transitioned over 50% of the University’s WordPress websites onto Rochester Core. The theme has since evolved into the University’s leading digital design system, setting the standard for web design and user experience across the institution.

This project came to life through the collective efforts of our team.

Boundless Possibilities: The University of Rochester’s Strategic Plan

In my role as the lead UX designer and developer for the University of Rochester’s Strategic Plan website, I was entrusted with transforming a print-based visual identity into a bespoke digital experience. This involved reimagining the creative elements of the print materials to craft an engaging online presence that resonated with a diverse audience. By blending traditional design aesthetics with modern web technologies, I ensured that the digital interpretation remained true to the University’s brand while offering an intuitive user experience.

A significant aspect of this project was leading the development of a complex information architecture. The website needed to effectively showcase a deep system of goals, objectives, and tactics, along with their intricate relationships. I designed and implemented an intuitive navigation system that allowed users to seamlessly explore the strategic plan’s multifaceted components without feeling overwhelmed. Interactive elements and visual hierarchies were utilized to highlight connections and provide clarity.

The final product successfully communicated the University’s strategic vision, making it accessible and engaging for students, faculty, staff, and external partners.

Grateful for the collaboration and dedication of these talented individuals.

Commencement Weekend

I lead the multi-phased digital campaign for the University of Rochester’s Commencement Weekend. This hallmark event is pivotal in celebrating the achievements of our graduates and engaging their families and alumni. My leadership spans strategic planning, cross-functional team coordination, and the orchestration of initiatives that ensure Commencement Weekend is a memorable and seamless experience for all participants.

A central challenge is presenting complex and intricate information in an accessible and engaging manner. I spearhead the development of user-centric platforms and communication materials that streamline schedules, ceremony details, and logistical information. Utilizing intuitive design principles and clear visual hierarchies, we make it effortless for participants to find what they need, enhancing their overall experience. I also oversee the live stream which extends the reach of Commencement Weekend, allowing families and alumni around the world to partake in the celebration.

To elevate Commencement Weekend as a signature event, I drive branding efforts that encapsulate the University’s spirit and the milestones of our students’ journeys. This involves creating compelling visuals, assets for social media campaigns, and integrating alumni narratives to foster a deep sense of community and pride. Under my direction, the campaign not only celebrates our graduates but also strengthens the University’s enduring connection with its extended family.

News Center Migration

As the lead developer and project manager, I oversaw the migration of the University of Rochester’s News Center website from a legacy, hand-built platform to the University’s enterprise WordPress system, Rochester Core. The project aimed to maintain uptime, performance, and functionality while transferring the site to a modern platform.

The migration involved mapping data fields between the old and new systems to ensure that all articles, images, and metadata were accurately transferred. I guided the team through planning, testing, and execution phases. We developed custom scripts and utilized migration tools to move the content efficiently, ensuring that SEO rankings were preserved and users experienced a smooth transition.

By updating the News Center to Rochester Core, we modernized the website, enhancing performance, security, and scalability. The new platform aligns with the University’s branding and accessibility standards, improving its storytelling capabilities and supporting the University’s reputation.

Grateful for the collaboration and dedication of these talented individuals.
